What do speech-language pathologists do?

⦁ Speech-language pathologists (i.e.,SLPs) assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, social communication, cognitive-communication, and voice disorders, as well as swallowing disorders in both children and adults.

⦁ New Neuro Waves treats individuals who have suffered from aphasia, traumatic brain injury, cognitive impairment, or a voice disorder.

What is Aphsia ?

Aphasia is an acquired language disorder that affects how a person communicates. It can impact expressive (i.e., speaking) and receptive (i.e., comprehension) language skills as well as reading and writing.
Aphasia can be the result of a stroke or a head injury. The severity of aphasia varies depending on the cause and extent of the brain damage. There are different types of aphasia depending on the area of the brain that was damaged. Aphasia can co-exist with other disorders as well.

What is Traumatic Brain Injury ?

Traumatic Brain Injury (i.e., TBI) is a brain dysfunction caused by an outside force, usually an impactful blow to the head. TBI could be the result of a motor vehicle accident or blunt force trauma to the head.

What is a Cognitive Impairment?

⦁ Cognitive impairment is when an individual has difficulty remembering, concentrating, learning new things, or making decisions that affect everyday life. Cognitive impairment can range from mild to severe. Cognitive impairment can be a result of a primary neural injury or previous diagnosis (e.g., stroke, brain injury, Parkinson’s disease, cancer)

What is a Voice Disorder?

⦁A voice disorder occurs when voice quality, pitch, and loudness are inappropriate for an individual’s age, gender, cultural background, or geographic location. A voice disorder is present when an individual expresses concern about having an abnormal voice that does not meet daily needs—even if others do not perceive it as different or deviant.
⦁A voice disorder can be a result of inefficient use of the vocal mechanism when the physical structure is normal, such as vocal fatigue, muscle tension, dysphonia or aphonia, or diplophonia

Stroke is a leading cause of death for Americans, but the risk of having a stroke varies with race and ethnicity. Every year, more than 795,000 people in the United States have a stroke. About 610,000 of these are first or new strokes.
There were approximately 214,110 TBI-related hospitalizations in 2020* and 69,473 TBI-related deaths in 2021.1
This represents more than 586 TBI-related hospitalizations and 190 TBI-related deaths per day
The prevalence of subjective Cognitive Decline (i.e., SCD) among adults aged 65 years and older is 11.7% compared to 10.8% among adults 45-64 years of age.
Voice disorders are more common than most people realize. Approximately 28 million workers in the U.S. experience daily voice problems.* Many of them are teachers, sales personnel, clergy, singers, fitness instructors, homemakers, business executives, coaches, speakers, or people who speak often in noisy environments.

01. Signs and Symptoms of Aphasia

Those who experience aphasia may have difficulty with spoken language expression, language comprehension, reading, and writing. The most common type of aphasia is called Broca’s aphasia, individuals typically demonstrate word retrieval difficulties, incomplete sentences, poor or absent grammar, and/or telegraphic speech.

02. Signs and Symptoms of a Traumatic Brain Injury

Those who experience a TBI may demonstrate impaired cognition (i.e., attention, memory), behavioral, and emotional functioning. Additionally, individuals may demonstrate reduced organizational skills, foresight, and information processing.

03. Signs and Symptoms of Cognitive Impairment

Those who experience a cognitive impairment may demonstrate difficulty with attention, memory, making judgments, or following a conversation.

04. Signs and Symptoms of A Voice Impairment

Those who perceive a voice disorder may demonstrate rough, breathy, strained, or strangled vocal quality. Additionally, vocal quality may be perceived as abnormal pitch, resonance, and/or loudness.
